The more the world becomes digital the more we become faceless companies, void of personality and not connecting with our clients or teams. Video has the unique ability to bridge this gap. People like to know who they are doing business with, flaws and all. Of course, this idea is not new. Richard Branson pioneered this by being the face of the brand.
Next week, we'll be talking with industry expert and entrepreneur, author, Camilla Collins about how to build your personal brand and the power this has for your business.
So jumping right into how you can prepare for your video production and deliver a stellar, confident performance.
Firstly, start with the script. I've previously written a blog about how to write a compelling script. So, I suggest you check that out, but even if you're being interviewed or you're just going to shoot from the hip, write your script out first, it'll help you plan and think through what you're going to say and make sure it's structured. Then always read it out aloud to yourself and even to someone else, even you can practice in front of a mirror, go over and over it a few times.
You'll find at first you'll be quite awkward, but I suggest you keep doing that and you'll feel more relaxed the more you do it. Make sure you time yourself because if you've planned for a five-minute shoot and you've written all this content you might find out that actually it took you a little bit longer and you need to just make it more concise.
Also, think about, is it conversational? How does it come across? Because the way we write is often different than the way we speak. So just adjust it. So it sounds more relaxed, more comfortable to listen to if you're working with a production company, make sure you send it over to the producer in advance so he can have it all set up and prepared for your arrival.
So next I want to talk about personal wellbeing. Get some exercise beforehand. So your skin's nice and fresh drink. Lots of water leading up to the shoot and making sure you're getting some good sleep.
Be happy with your hair, prepare it in advance. Don't just leave it to the shoot day.
Of course, that's not a problem I have. Always leave enough time to have your makeup done as well or to do it yourself. You don't need to go crazy, but with the strong lights, it does show up any blotchy skin. So especially through the central areas, think about a little concealer and some translucent powder. So even for the guys, a little bit of something just to take the shine off is always recommended.
Just warm up your voice beforehand and practice speaking from the chest and that you're being well heard, like a singer before a performance, they'll do vocal exercises.
Often when I start shooting with people and because they're concentrating so much, they end up becoming quite stiff. So what I do is just get them to jump up and down, shake their arms around, to loosen them up so they're more comfortable when they're speaking to the camera.
And my final tip is ‘just keep trying’. You'll get better and better the more you do.
I hope you found this helpful.
